Before it launched the console was code named PlayStation X. The gaming media called it PSX, and even though the X was dropped the name stuck, especially online, where people would rather say PSX than spell out “PlayStation.” The 90s were big on abbreviations (LMAO, for instance, and GCN for GameCube).
